Here’s some content to keep you busy while you’re waiting for my next photo ;-)
Classic Street Photography
Henri Cartier-Bresson, Garry Winogrand and Robert Frank: Three names that are shouted out loud in a heartbeat when a street photographer’s ear catches ‘street photogra…’ in a conversation. And, rightfully so, these are three massive names in street photography, often cited as “the masters of the art”. But, the list of amazing street photographers doesn’t end there. There are many more photographers out there who’s pictures have sculptured and defined what we now call “street photography”. Some are more famous than others, some are just being discovered and some haven’t yet surfaced.
Vivian Maier is an amateur street photographer who’s work has been unknown until 2007. Born in 1926, means she was out on the streets with her camera during the same period as “the greats” but different circumstances meant she would not be discovered until a young historian came across some of her negatives at a car boot sale. A nice video here as well as a blog with some of her pictures here.
Modern Street Photography
Yanidel (Yanick Delafoge) is one of my favourite modern (aka. alive and kicking) street photographers. His work is fresh, poetic and full of life. I stumbled upon his Paris Street Photography blog last year and have been following it ever since. Now, he continues wowing us with daily posts on his new blog “80 weeks around the world”.
Claire is a fellow Mancunian with a stunning eye for a good picture and one, of (very) few young photographers, who shoots exclusively with film. She says: “I express myself using a camera, making tidy souvenirs of this sad and wonderful mess.” Her souvenirs are a work of art, hence, I have no doubt you will love her portfolio.
I met Jennifer completely at random in a camera shop. She asked what I like taking pictures of, I said “people”, she said “me too”, I said “Cool! You might like my blog”, she said “I have a blog too!”… Everything was going so well until the guy running the shop mumbled: “Show me yours, I’ll show you mine.” Well, I’m glad she showed me her street photography, because it’s super! Oh did I mention she shoots film? Well worth following the link.
